What are the most popular hair extension methods?
In this blog, let me cover some of the most popular hair extension methods for you straightforwardly. I want to begin with the most popular systems I use and have loved for many years.
The crimped micro linking hair extension methods.
The most popular hair extension methods are notably the crimped micro linking systems. The crimped micro connecting systems are a strand by strand method favored for durability and long-lasting wear.
These systems are like wearing your natural hair with the strand by strand installation. The strand by strand hair extension methods requires exceptional human hair for the most effortless wear. The procedure is to double or triple draw hair for a smooth and tangle-free extension that meshes seamlessly with the natural hair.
This blog includes other popular hair extension methods like clip-in, tape-ins, Sew-ins, and keratin fusion systems. Not included in this blog are techniques such as braiding, crocheting, or others.
Certified hair extension systems.
Not all micro links are the same! The crimped micro linking methods are certified installation systems that require professional training and experienced installation.
The hair installed is essential, and poor quality hair gives poor results in the wear of the hair extensions.
The crimped micro linking systems.
The crimped micro link method requires certification training. Unique tools are needed to install and remove the links without ripping the natural hair. So make sure you go to a certified hair extension technician for these services.
They stay for an incredible six months without shedding and with very little maintenance.
The hair used for the crimped micro linking methods will use a nail head strand with high-quality double or triple drawn Remy human hair. The nailhead hair is round circular tips placed inside the micro link with the client’s hair strands and secured with the crimp.
Our flared micro links come in four sizes and seven different colours. We use the flared micro links for the crimped micro linking methods.
The crimped method takes the nail head strand with the client’s hair strands and threads it through the tiny copper ring. You attach the hair extension with a crimp and secure the extension strand in your hair.
There are half sizes for fine or blonde hair. Commonly is the standard size, medium size and Nano size.
You can see how tiny the half size is. There are lots of different kinds of micro links. Knowledge and correct installation make the difference in their longevity and comfort.
Our hair extension methods.
Micro linking is not cold fusion. With micro linking, there is no glue fusing your natural hair to the bonds. The adhesive on the pre-tipped strand of hair used in micro linking is more like a sticky note glue, and it’s not capable of fusing to your hair.
Here are the nail head tips created by Betty Bizzarre! And the cold fusion ones! The strands are free-flowing and work seamlessly within your hair, making them popular hair extension methods.
The keratin cold fusion hair extension system.
This strand by strand popular hair extension method is safe and comfortable to wear. The hair used is top-quality Remy human hair, and the technique softens the glue blond without the harsh melting procedure. The highly complex equipment sends ultrasonic pulses allowing the adhesive to soften, not melt, and the technician forms bonds attaching the extension hair to the natural hair.
Alternative popular hair extension methods.
The cold fusion bonds are pre-tipped to form various shapes, mostly preference. I prefer the keratin glue V tip.
The advantage in creating your personalized hair strands is colour within the individual hair strands and quality control of the hair within the strands.
The keratin cold fusion system lasts four to five months and is soft and comfortable to wear. The colour of the bonds transforms to the client’s natural hair colour. They are easy to remove and can easily be removed by others.
I’ve been doing this hair extensions method in my hair for over twenty years. I wouldn’t wear any other form.
The cold keratin fusion costs more and doesn’t last as long as the micro linking, but it’s healthier on natural hair, especially for fine-haired clients.
Non-certified popular hair extension methods.
Micro links are popular hair extensions by DIY as they are usually readily available for sale to the public and do not require training. They come in all sizes, and variations can be ordered from other companies or online or bought at Sally’s or other supply outlets.
Micro rings, microbeads and micro links.
These non-certified micro links are pressed half into a flat bond, not crimped, and removed with pliers.
Sometimes called micro rings, micro beads and micro links come in different kinds and sizes. Some micro links come with silicone inside, or you can get them with an inside screw or ridges inside the micro link for a tighter grip.
Clip-ins
The most popular hair extension method for people beginning to wear hair extensions and the most straightforward approach is the clip in’s. Clip-ins are sections from a hair weft, also known as weaves, attached toupee clips.
From a weft, you cut your section and place your toupee clip on the back of the weft. Adhere by gluing and or sewing the attachment. A comb-like grip at the back of the toupee clip; this comb goes outside the weft. The toupee clips grip the hair locking the hair extensions in place.
You can have a complete set of these extensions or have individual pieces throughout your head.
Remove the clip-in hair extensions before bed. Sleeping with the clip-on in your hair can cause breakage or damage to your hair.
Adhere by gluing and or sewing the attachment. A comb-like grip at the back of the toupee clip; this comb goes outside the weft. Which grips and clips the hair during installation locking the extension in place. You can have a complete set of these extensions or have individual pieces throughout your head.
The toupee clips come in four colours. I’m missing my dark brown; one little dark brown left!
They come in blonde, light brown, black, and dark brown.
The hair you can buy in the weft comes in different qualities like single drawn, double drawn, triple drawn, etc. Hair extension qualities should always be Remy meaning the cuticles all run in the same direction.
Avoid fallen hair, non-cuticle, and single-drawn for natural-looking hair extensions.
Clip-ins are inexpensive and do not need professional installation, making them a popular hair extension method.
Tape-Ins
Tape-ins are popular hair extension methods they are like the wefts only without thread attaching the hairs its glue!
These have; you can see, it’s got polyurethane-coated panels with double-sided tape attached on top with the hairs directed downward resembling the strands coming from a scalp. Usually, the hair used for tape-ins and clip-ins is single-drawn which is less expensive, and is low-quality hair.
Custom orders can use high-quality hair for both systems. The method of application for tape-ins can be in different ways. The most common is to take a section of the client’s hair and sandwich the two glued pieces on each side of the hair section. Other methods may sandwich one panel with a glue strip, depending on the manufacturing.
Clip-ins, tape-ins, and Sew-ins systems may be bulky at the base of the hair, but thicker or longer layered hair can hide this. Care is needed to cover up with fine or delicate hair. This method is inexpensive and installed fast, making them popular hair extension methods.
Sew-Ins
Sew-ins are also popular hair extension methods because they are relatively fast to install and less expensive than the strand by strand methods.
The quality of hair can vary, making the price range as well. Sew-in hair wefts have many different attributes, lengths, and colors. Sew-ins are installed by placing cornrows or braids and sewing the weft onto the braid.
Wefts can also be installed in the hair using micro links bonding the natural hair strands to strands from the weave. The micro links used in this installation are usually the flat pressed kind.
It was first suited for black hair types, now worn by all hair types. These are popular hair extension methods to have thick hair at a medium price range with minimal time on installation.
Other Companies
Here are some of the samples I have from other hair companies. This first sample is from a high-end cold fusion line. The keratin fusion bonds are the same colour as the hair strands, and these keratin cold fusion bonds blend in with the client’s hair colour. This hair extension line is costly and a brand name with requirements on ordering.
Alternative flat keratin fusion strands
These are very thick from a company that sent me samples, and it’s not a brand I use, and the bonds would turn out far too cumbersome.
Here I have some samples of some less expensive fusion brands. Each company seems to do their version of strands with various shapes, some being good and some not so good.
These are the U-tipped ones I’m showing first. For fusion tips, we use a press as I have here. On the hand, I have the U-tip press, the I-tip press, and the V-tp press. The shape of the press has no reflection on the system, and it’s only the installer’s preference.
The keratin fusion will come in many sizes, shapes, colors and formulas. The flat, clear, and golden bond is more complex, and the other is a softer keratin bond in a larger gold form.
Which one you like better is going to depend on preference. You have to try and see for yourself! That’s the only way to know!
Also famous is the black keratin glue for dark hair, and the flat pellets are for the cold fusion.
Great Lengths
The Great Lengths bonds last six months in the client’s hair without shedding or slipping. Any professional GL Salon can remove these strong bonds, and the cost is extra, and the remover is pricey.
Other companies Nail head strands.
These nail head strands are from companies that have sent hair samples to me. These have very long tips, and all the pieces are about half a gram thick.
Conclusion
For these popular hair extension methods, I have the products on hand, which I have developed the most success with over the years.
